about

Drew wrote this song very early on in the history of Drew & Bob, we played it at our very first gig and never again. Bob always felt it had potential and wanted to use it, and was also failing to write a duo for the album, and then this version was born during the recording of the album.
Jas' harmony vocal at the end of the verse is a (not so) subtle tribute to The Carpenters.

lyrics

I’ve worn these chains around my neck
For many a-hundred days
There tired and there pulling me
Down into my grave
I don’t want to go there
But it’s killing me to stay
So baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free

You hounded and you cursed me babe
All into the night
You ain’t been so clever girl
You never had it right
You never were my lover
I couldn’t call you a friend
So baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free.

(Instrumental)

Well time is flowing off the floor
My hour is getting late
You’ve got someone whose waiting there
He’s a-banging on your gate
If I didn’t know you well
I wouldn’t hold my breath
So Baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free.

You just have to look outside
Their howling out your name
If it was your loving babe
It just ain’t the same
I could never catch you
But you’re always holding me
So Baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free.
