Walking To Nashville
02:48
|
|||
I broke my back a walking,
To Nashville Tennessee,
It’s been a long old journey girl,
Please lift this weight from me.
Walking down that long old road,
My Thumb was pointing out,
No trucks were stopping girl,
They just pull their horns and shout.
I broke my back a walking, to you.
I broke my back a walking, to you.
I walked right on down that road,
For many days and many a night.
The rain started pouring down,
The past is out of sight.
Well, I hope you’ll be waiting girl,
I’ve done all this for you,
I can’t wait to see your face,
And hold your body too.
I broke my back a walking, to you.
I broke my back a walking, to you.
And when I got to Nashville,
They told me you’d gone away,
Gone to start a new life,
Without me in your way.
I broke my back a walking, I broke my back a walking,
I broke my back a walking, for you. x2
Intrumental
I broke my back a walking,
To Nashville Tennessee,
It’s been a long old journey girl,
and now you’re not here for me.
It’s been a long old journey girl, and now you’re not here,
You’re not here; you’re not here, for me.

Diamond Street
03:22
|
|||
Deep among the roots
Of an old idle dwelling,
The Brownstone and the beams
Cracked under the sun.
The parade outside was marching,
The brass band they were passing,
And the girls up on Diamond way
Called you in to have some fun.
There was Mae Healy and Mrs Faith
Who’d lift you of your feet,
And many saw old saucy Nell
Chase you into the street;
But remember when those two young boys,
George Best and his friend John,
Had a shoot-out by the sidewalk
As the Sunday Riot began.
(Chorus)
“Come and have a drink on us”
That’s what you’ll hear them say,
“If you’re up from New York city
Or along to Albany.”
Well, if you fell in love
With a girl, just passing through,
You’d better stick to your road boy
For the things they’d do to you.
Well George Best became Duffys man
Who he chased around town;
While little Johnny took from him
The bawdy house he owned.
Charles Hermance, they came to know
The man who had it all.
In 1876 Johnny put
A bullet through his skull.
(Chorus)
They sent Johnny of on the train.
For his crime he gave his wife all the blame.
Broken-hearted she fled,
Cursed the man she had wed.
While the boys up from Pittsfield came again.
And the cops jumped the girls
Who left there too soon,
All but for Evelyn
Whose home lies in ruin;
No one to invite you in
Except the cats laid on the floor,
And the lonely doors of Diamond Street:
They opened there no more.
(Chorus)
(Repeat Final Line)

Sally Town
03:51
|
|||
Well that howling rain is rolling in
From the St George port to the Pittsburgh rim.
Chief said, “you’d better lock yourself in.”
Oh Mary my queen is talking with the shells
While they clamber up the old chimney bell.
Oh no, things aren’t going so well.
Oh Mary won’t you stay?
It won’t do me good to leave today.
Did I hear you say?
We’re coming down from Sally town. x2
Hear that wind on the old steel rails
My Sister tried to make it but her tongues gone pale,
Said she heard it wouldn’t come so soon.
Mrs Finn with her old bucket there,
Trying to catch the rain coming down the stairs
Her kids were there, for the whole affair.
The clouds are turning cool
And all I can think of is you.
Grab that line passing through.
We’re blowing down from Sally Town. x2
Well I had guitar strapped across the tracks;
I was bound to play in New York such a long time back.
There’s no way I’m getting out of here alive.
Their tough in this place and I don’t know what I’ve done;
There’s a mean old lady and she ain’t out for fun;
She’s crowing, like the bat’s got her tongue.
Better hope she isn’t staying here too long.
And Mary’s keeping strong,
Staying by the lowlight in the fog.
She’ll cut those ropes when we’re gone.
We’re going down from Sally Town. x3

Long Time Ma
04:16
|
|||
Drive on ma, go past me on that road.
Well drive on ma, won’t you go on down that road.
Waters are low, and the rain’s got nowhere to go.
It’s been a long time ma.
Summer sun, gone dried up those roots below.
Summer sun, gone dried up those roots below.
Now I don’t know, where a rambler can find a home.
It’s been a long time ma.
I’ve seen the Homeless Brother, singing there on his own.
Yes I’ve seen the Homeless Brother, singing there on his own.
To the Cascade road, all the way down to Guadalupe.
It’s been a long time ma.
(Instrumental)
I broke away, I stole into the night.
Yes I broke away, I stole into the night.
Snowfields all around, floating over the ground.
It’s been a long time ma.
Cold winds blow, all the way down south.
Yeah the cold winds blow, all the way down south.
I never wrote home, no I never sent a word
It’s been a long time ma.

Help Me
03:57
|
|||
I tried to drag myself out of that hole I called my life,
But the light is blinding me,
I tried to drag myself out of that hole I called my life,
I’m just longing to be free.
Oh, Won’t someone help me,
Oh, Won’t someone help me please,
I’m not asking for too much, I’m just down on my luck.
Oh, Won’t someone help me.
I’m just trying to learn to love the woman I call my wife,
I can see her leaving me,
I’m trying to love the woman I call my wife,
But I don’t think she’s trying to love me.
Chorus
Well, I got out of that hole I called my life,
And I’m more scared then I was before,
Well I got out of that hole I called my life,
I don’t know what to live for.
Chorus

Baby When Will I Go Free
02:22
|
|||
I’ve worn these chains around my neck
For many a-hundred days
There tired and there pulling me
Down into my grave
I don’t want to go there
But it’s killing me to stay
So baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free
You hounded and you cursed me babe
All into the night
You ain’t been so clever girl
You never had it right
You never were my lover
I couldn’t call you a friend
So baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free.
(Instrumental)
Well time is flowing off the floor
My hour is getting late
You’ve got someone whose waiting there
He’s a-banging on your gate
If I didn’t know you well
I wouldn’t hold my breath
So Baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free.
You just have to look outside
Their howling out your name
If it was your loving babe
It just ain’t the same
I could never catch you
But you’re always holding me
So Baby
Baby
Baby when will I go free.

These Lonely Nights
04:33
|
|||
I turn out your light
To wish you were gone,
But my mind lies still
On the growing dawn,
No time has passed
Now that I’m alone.
What dreamless nights
Have awoken me,
What fair-shaped mists
Have I longed to see,
What sworn words breathed
Of where I should be.
(Chorus)
What lonely nights girl
The things that I hear
It’s a lonely night girl
Oh the things I hear
It’s a long way home
But it ain’t too far from here.
Oh the wind is heavy
On my heart oh dear
The wind is strong
On me my dear
It’s a long way home
But it ain’t too far from here.
Minutes of faces
I have longed to see,
Breaking through my soul
Breaking through to me,
Yours is there
Its not the one I need.
While the moon is lit
And the corners shake,
My lungs are chilled
And the cold breath brakes,
I’m lonesome now
It’s enough for me to take.
(Chorus)
I can’t stop to think
Of the things we heard,
Not from one another
But from one another’s words,
I’ve been alone since
Leaving on that road.
There was a time
At the drop of a hat
I’d see beyond that way
And you’d be running back,
But these many years
Went and took everything I had.
(Chorus)

Maybe Then I'll Know
03:13
|
|||
I’m heading home, baby, heading home,
I’m walking out that door,
And then I just won’t worry anymore.
I’m heading home, darling, heading home,
I’m leaving don’t you see?
Because of all these things you did to me.
But I just don’t know where I belong…
I guess I just have to find myself,
So I’m packing up my case,
And I’m moving on, from this place.
I guess I just have to find myself,
So I’ll travel ‘round this earth,
And then maybe I’ll get what I deserve.
But I just don’t know, where I belong…
This part of my life has come to end,
I wish I had sat, instead of lay,
And maybe we’ll meet again, someday.
This part of my life has come to end,
So I heading out to sea,
I will go wherever the wind takes me.
And maybe then I’ll know where I belong…

Train To Ohio
03:14
|
|||
I took that train, to Ohio,
I didn’t know, where else to go.
I look that train, to Ohio,
Maybe there, I wont be alone.
Maybe Virginia, is for me,
I’ll go look, and I’ll go see.
Maybe Virginia, is for me,
But I’m still looking for the key.
I took a bus, to Carolina,
‘Cause Carolina, that’s where it’s at.
I took that bus, to Carolina,
Maybe there I can lay my hat.
I took a road, on down to Georgia;
I met a girl, along the way,
I took that road, on down to Georgia,
And I’ll head back that way, some day.
Alabama? That sounds swell,
Alabama, you know me well,
Through all the troubles, in my life,
You were the one, I could always tell.
Louisiana, has my soul,
Or so, I’ve been told,
Louisiana, owns my soul,
‘Hope you don’t mind me being so bold.
I’ve been lost, and I’ve been found,
I’m not sure how, I got around.
So I take a plane, back to NYC,
‘Cause I know NYC is good to me.
‘Cause I know NYC is good to me.
‘Cause I know NYC is good to me.

Did you ever see the long summer go?
The timid beating of a hard snow
Came filling the heart of an old weathered boat
That drift to the quiet night, as many of us should.
We were old when the story came through.
A thousand miles in reach it grew
With youthful tongue there was little of ruin
A thousand miles passed away too soon.
The warmth in their eyes, it held on like fire.
But slowly its grip fell in the cold of the night.
They betrayed their hope as they hungered deep
While innocent with toil and hearts too weak.
As silver wings beat high, nothing grew below
Except for the lives of those now scattered and thrown
It was one man who stood there and tilled the earth
Now no man has hope for any of its worth.
Hold your fear of dark and the lonely wilds
No roots of life have been grown free of their trials
Don’t wake in the morn if there’s no mud to change
There’s many a word of worth for land and its age.
And if that rain hails through the soil,
That has no roots to hold to,
Then it shall shake the blackening coal
And help the rolling earth to fall.
For now the trees grow tired of the storm
Their veins all cracked and worn.
Their spirits tied to rocks and bone
Won’t bow again.
And hope that sun will wait for spring
Let those words be heard again
Call out the aching moon and rain
As every soul comes crawling in
Don’t wait for things to come unbound
The oldest wave is without sound
It will sing and it will bring
The heavy storm.
